Indoor Outdoor Basketball Court Tiles: Choosing the Right Line

Planning an indoor outdoor basketball court? Every Game Tile Courts line is either indoor-only or built for indoor and outdoor use. Here is why the split exists, with the temperature and warranty rows from each product page, and a short set of questions that settles the choice.

If you are planning an indoor outdoor basketball court, or deciding which side of that line your space falls on, the tile line is the first decision. Every tile line we sell falls into one of two groups: lines engineered exclusively for indoor installation, and lines built to install indoor or outdoor. The split is not marketing. It comes from how the tile handles water, sunlight, and temperature swings, and picking the wrong group is the surest way to a disappointing court. This guide quotes the temperature and warranty rows from each product page and walks you through the choice.

Why the indoor and outdoor lines exist

Our site FAQ puts it plainly: open-grid tiles are designed for outdoor use, and water drains through the surface rather than pooling. Solid-top tiles are for indoor venues where a smooth, friction-free surface matters, and where sun and rain never reach the floor.

    What separates the two groups

    Drainage

An indoor-and-outdoor tile has an open-grid structure. Dink Pro's page describes it as optimized for quick drainage, with no puddles and play resuming in minutes. Indoor tiles do the opposite. Indoor Solid Flex has a non-porous surface that resists stains. Our indoor cleaning guide adds the practical consequence: modular indoor tiles are not waterproof at the seams the way outdoor tiles are, so you never soak them. No wet string mops, no buckets of standing water, and no steam cleaners.

    UV stability

ProPlay Elite carries a UV Resistance row of Advanced UV Stabilizers, GameCourt Standard lists Standard UV Protection, Driveway Pro uses UV-stabilized pigments, and Hydro Grip is protected against sun damage, mold, and mildew. No indoor product page claims a UV rating, because none is needed under a roof.

    Temperature range

Our outdoor cleaning guide notes that outdoor tiles are engineered for freeze-thaw conditions and stay installed year-round. Among the indoor lines, only Indoor Flex Hardwood states a range, and it is a conditioned-space number: 40°F to 100°F. Indoor Solid Flex and Indoor Courtwood have no Temperature Range row at all.

    Sound

Indoor Solid Flex is the one line whose spec table states a figure: Sound Reduction up to 20dB. Indoor Flex Hardwood and Indoor Courtwood publish no sound figure, so we will not attach one to them.

    The indoor-only lines

Two of these make up the Indoor-Only Collection on our Products page, engineered exclusively for gyms, studios, and conditioned facilities. Indoor Flex Hardwood has its own page but is not listed there. For room planning, ceiling heights and layouts, see our indoor basketball court guide.

    • Indoor Solid Flex (shortened to Indoor Flex on our sport pages): Warranty 10 Years, Sound Reduction up to 20dB, Indoor Use Certified, no Temperature Range row. For home gyms, fitness studios, training rooms, and basements.
    • Indoor Flex Hardwood: Temperature Range 40°F to 100°F, Warranty 10 Years, Environment Indoor Only. One Maple finish, for indoor basketball, dance, and recreation spaces.
    • Indoor Courtwood: Warranty 12 Years, Indoor Use Certified, no Temperature Range or Sound Reduction row. Classic Maple and Dark Maple finishes, for indoor courts, dance studios, rec rooms, and training facilities.

    The indoor-and-outdoor lines

Our Products page, which lists our outdoor sport court tiles by collection, groups seven of these lines as Indoor + Outdoor: Cushioned Flex Pro, Upgraded Pro Elite, Dink Pro, All-Court Classic, Driveway Pro, Hydro Grip, and SoftPlay. Our homepage tile table tags All-Court Classic, Driveway Pro, and Hydro Grip as Outdoor, which describes their usual installation, not a restriction. ProPlay Elite, GameCourt Standard, and Industrial Pro have their own pages. Temperature Range and Warranty rows, from each page:

    • Dink Pro: -20°F to 150°F, 8 Years. Our flagship tile and the best choice for serious pickleball.
    • Cushioned Flex Pro: -20°F to 150°F, 12 Years. Basketball, volleyball, and hockey.
    • Upgraded Pro Elite: no Temperature Range row published, up to 15-Year Limited. A rigid all-weather tile with a thermal expansion system, and the line our Hockey page recommends for competitive inline hockey. Ask for its rated range before an outdoor install in a hard-freeze climate.
    • All-Court Classic: -30°F to 160°F, 7-Year Limited. The best-value multi-sport line for families, schools, churches, camps, and HOA communities, ASBA certified with GTC Fit locking and balanced traction, and listed on our sport pages for combining sports on one surface.
    • Driveway Pro: -30°F to 160°F, up to 15 Years (limited, per the spec row), 40,000+ lbs dynamic load rating, Vehicle Weight Rated. Home driveways, compact courts, and RV pads.
    • ProPlay Elite: -30°F to 150°F, up to 15-Year Limited. Its page lists it as FIBA approved, for professional basketball, tennis, and multi-sport play, with school gymnasiums listed alongside tournament venues.
    • GameCourt Standard: -20°F to 140°F, 10-Year Limited. Basketball, pickleball, and volleyball, with pool decks and home gyms among its applications.
    • Hydro Grip: 0°F to 160°F, 10 Years, listed on its page as Slip-Resistant Certified. Pool decks, patios, outdoor showers, and spa areas. Its 0°F low end is the narrowest cold rating of any line we sell, so in a hard-freeze climate ask us before specifying it.
    • Industrial Pro: -40°F to 180°F, 20-Year Commercial. Chemical resistance to oil, grease, and solvents. A warehouse, auto shop, and commercial gym floor, not a sport court line.
    • SoftPlay: -10°F to 140°F, 8 Years, Fall Height Rating up to 4 feet, ASTM F1292 Compliant. A safety surface for playgrounds, schools, daycares, indoor play areas, and sensory rooms rather than a court.

Every line in this group that publishes a Temperature Range tolerates freezing, which no indoor line claims. Warranty terms vary by line, from 7-Year Limited on All-Court Classic to up to 15 years on the sport court lines and a separate 20-Year Commercial term on Industrial Pro, so read the row on the page you are buying. One caution: our written Limited Product Warranty covers manufacturing defects only and lists vehicle traffic, non-sport use, and chemical exposure among its exclusions. If you are buying Driveway Pro for parking or Industrial Pro for a shop floor, have the terms for that use confirmed in writing with your quote.

    Drainage is not stormwater credit

Our open-grid tiles let water pass through the surface, but they are not certified or rated as a stormwater-permeable pavement system under municipal stormwater codes. If your project needs permeable pavement credit, the tile surface will not supply it.

Garages and outbuildings: which group fits

A garage is where the choice is least obvious, and the deciding question is whether the space is heated and cooled year round. In a conditioned garage or basement, any indoor line works. In an unheated garage, a detached outbuilding or a pool house, the floor lives through freezing winters and hot summers, so choose an indoor-and-outdoor line such as Cushioned Flex Pro, or Driveway Pro, which lists garage floors among its uses.

Two more checks before you order. Our indoor installation guide calls for a concrete slab flat within 1/8 inch per 10 ft with a moisture barrier in place, and recommends at least 16 ft of ceiling height for basketball and 12 ft for pickleball or tennis. We surface an existing building. We do not construct one, so the structure, the slab and any heating and cooling come from a local builder.

    How to choose

    Work through these in order.

    • Will the floor ever see rain, snow, or direct sun? If yes, you need an indoor-and-outdoor line, because indoor tiles are not waterproof at the seams and carry no UV rating. Indoor Flex Hardwood is also rated only for 40°F to 100°F, and the other indoor lines publish no range, so tell us if the space is an unheated garage or basement.
    • Is the space fully conditioned, and is the priority a wood look or a quiet floor? Indoor Flex Hardwood or Indoor Courtwood for the look, Indoor Solid Flex for the up to 20dB sound reduction.
    • Is pickleball the main sport? Dink Pro is the line we built for it. Basketball with cushion underfoot points to Cushioned Flex Pro, and a family court that does a bit of everything points to All-Court Classic.
    • Does the surface double as a driveway, parking pad, or shop floor? Driveway Pro is the residential line with a Vehicle Weight Rated row. For forklifts and commercial vehicle traffic, Industrial Pro is the vehicle-rated line.
    • Is the floor around a pool, spa, or outdoor shower? Hydro Grip is the Slip-Resistant Certified line for wet areas, though as our Products FAQ says, any surface can be slippery when wet. Note its 0°F low end in a hard-freeze climate.

The indoor-and-outdoor lines also work indoors, so a school can specify ProPlay Elite for its gym and its outdoor court. The reverse is never true.

    Frequently asked questions

Can indoor court tiles be used outside?

No. Indoor tiles are not waterproof at the seams, no indoor product page claims a UV rating, and the only indoor line that publishes a temperature range, Indoor Flex Hardwood, is rated for 40°F to 100°F. Rain, sun and frost are exactly what those lines were not built for.

Can outdoor court tiles be used indoors?

Yes. Every indoor-and-outdoor line also works indoors, which is how one line can cover a gym and an outdoor court. The indoor-only lines add things the others do not, such as the up to 20dB sound reduction of Indoor Solid Flex and the maple finishes of the wood-look lines. If you would rather start from a pre-boxed kit, compare our basketball court tiles by court size.

    Your next step

Decide which group you are in, then compare the two or three lines that fit on our full product lineup, where each collection is labeled Indoor Only or Indoor + Outdoor. ProPlay Elite, GameCourt Standard, Industrial Pro, and Indoor Flex Hardwood are not on that page yet, so use the links above for those. Then request a quote with a rough court size. Tell us whether the court is indoors or out, what the base is, and which sports it must serve, and we will confirm the line, the tile count, and the accessories before anything ships.
