    The Problem with Garage-Top Courts

Rooftop and garage-deck courts fight water. Standing water, moisture vapor, and hydrostatic pressure can push up through the deck and blister, peel, and crack conventional coatings and resurfaced surfaces.

For property owners, that can mean repainting and repairing on a short cycle. The playing surface needs to work with the deck's drainage, rather than trap moisture beneath a coating.

Why an Elevated Tile Surface Works Here

GTC tiles sit elevated and interlocked above the deck. Water and moisture can drain and dry beneath the playing surface instead of being trapped under a coating.

    • Elevated tiles let water and moisture drain and dry beneath the playing surface.
    • There is no surface coating to blister or peel.
    • The interlocked surface accommodates normal deck movement.
    • The design draws on GTC's permeable-base (gravel-base) drainage experience.

GTC is both the tile manufacturer and the court builder. Our permeable-base drainage experience informs the design, while each rooftop or garage deck receives its own assessment.

    Expert Answers

    Rooftop & Garage-Top Court Questions

Will a tile court add much weight to the deck?
Tiles add weight, and the acceptable load depends on the deck and the selected tile. The deck assessment should include review by your property's qualified structural professional before installation. We do not assume a load rating or promise that a particular deck can support a court. Discuss your deck
How does drainage work under the tiles?
GTC tiles sit elevated and interlocked above the deck, allowing water and moisture to drain and dry beneath the playing surface instead of being trapped beneath a coating. The existing deck still needs working drainage; tiles do not replace drains or repair a drainage problem. Plan your court drainage
Does the tile protect the deck surface/membrane?
The tile provides a playing surface above the deck, but it is not a waterproofing membrane or a repair for one. We do not promise membrane protection. The existing surface or membrane and the proposed installation details must be assessed for compatibility before installation. Request a deck assessment
Can tiles go over an existing cracked surface?
An existing surface needs assessment and any necessary repairs before tile installation. At Peachtree Village in Hackettstown NJ, 11,124 sq ft of tile was installed over existing asphalt after crack repair. That does not mean tiles repair cracks or that every cracked rooftop deck is suitable. Discuss your existing surface
Which sports fit on a garage top?
Tennis, pickleball, basketball and multi-game layouts can be planned for a garage top. The layout depends on the available space and deck assessment. Tile families are matched to the sport, including true pickleball bounce from the All-Court Classic / Dink Pro family and cushioned tile options. Get a free Court CAD layout
